71% of UK finance leaders expect tokenization to reshape financial services: Lloyds

Summary

Nearly three-quarters of major UK financial institutions expect tokenization to significantly reshape financial services, according to a Lloyds survey of 100 senior decision-makers at banks, insurers, asset managers and financial sponsors. The main expected benefit is faster payments and settlement, cited by 60%, followed by better collateral and liquidity management at 41%. Institutions see blockchain-based infrastructure as a way to move assets and payments onto digital rails, freeing up capital and liquidity for other uses. Lloyds says the next step is building scalable infrastructure with interoperability and common standards across digital and traditional markets. The bank has also tested tokenization directly through a public blockchain transaction involving tokenized deposits and a tokenized UK government bond. UK policymakers are pushing similar efforts, including longer settlement hours, interoperable payment systems, and plans to expand tokenized finance, which could add £33 billion to annual economic output by 2035.
