Anthropic suspends access to Fable 5, Mythos 5, citing US directive
Anthropic suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models after receiving a US government export control directive citing national security concerns. The company said it was ordered to block access for any foreign national, including foreign employees, and disabled the models for all users to comply. Other models, including Opus 4.8, were not affected. The directive came only days after the models were released. Anthropic said regulators did not share detailed evidence, but appear concerned about a possible narrow “jailbreak” that could bypass Fable 5 safeguards. Anthropic argued this is a limited issue, not a broad safety failure, and said treating it as grounds to recall a commercial model would set a precedent that could slow future model releases across the industry. It believes the order may stem from a misunderstanding and is trying to restore access.
