Apple Eases NFT, Crypto Rules for iOS Apps Following Antitrust Ruling
Epic Games' antitrust case against Apple resulted in Apple easing restrictions for developers in the U.S. regarding non-standard purchasing methods and digital collectibles. A U.S. District Judge found Apple in violation of a 2021 court injunction, leading to a prohibition on collecting fees from purchases made outside iOS apps and limiting developers' ability to direct users to third-party sites. Apple informed developers that apps can now include links to browse NFT collections. While in-app purchases remain restricted, this change may encourage innovation in crypto-native mobile apps. NFT marketplaces like OpenSea have faced limitations on purchases through iOS apps. Apple’s guidelines still impose strict rules on cryptocurrencies, prohibiting certain activities like ICOs and mining. Google has updated its policies to allow NFTs to unlock in-app content regardless of purchase location.
