Are 24/7 CME Bitcoin futures a volatility cure — or a new leverage trap?
CME launched 24/7 trading for Bitcoin futures and options on May 29, giving institutions continuous access to regulated crypto hedging. The first weekend saw over 7,200 contracts trade, about $50 million notional, but Bitcoin soon fell below $70,000 as the market suffered a major deleveraging wave with nearly $10 billion in long liquidations in a week. The new market structure removes the old CME weekend gap and could, in theory, improve price discovery and let desks hedge real-time instead of waiting until Sunday night. But the launch happened during a sharp open-interest unwind, so it is unclear whether continuous access stabilized markets or simply accelerated moves in thin liquidity. CME’s broader crypto franchise is growing quickly, and it also launched around-the-clock Bitcoin Volatility futures. Still, early evidence shows Bitcoin’s weekend risk remains intact; it now just trades on Wall Street’s clock.
