Bank of England governor denies Farage lobbying swayed CBDC policy: Report
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey denied that Nigel Farage’s lobbying influenced the central bank’s work on a potential digital pound. In a letter reported by The Guardian, Bailey said the BoE can identify attempts to sway its policymaking and confirmed that no policy changes followed his meeting with Farage. The discussion reportedly covered cryptocurrencies and other topics. Farage, a prominent CBDC critic and Reform Party leader, resigned his parliamentary seat amid reports that he accepted gifts from crypto-linked individuals. He said he had not broken any law. Separately, the UK’s National Crime Agency is reportedly investigating transactions involving other Reform UK figures. The BoE continues researching a CBDC but has made no launch decision. It says any digital pound would require further analysis and public consultation. It is also running a pilot to test settlement of tokenized assets using central bank money.
