Bernie Sanders Pushes Bill to Ban Advanced AI Development
Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, which would permanently ban artificial superintelligence and temporarily pause advanced AI development. The pause would stay in place until a new federal agency sets safety standards and a review process for AI models. The bill defines superintelligence broadly, including systems that match or exceed human abilities across many tasks or could undermine human control. It creates a cabinet-level agency and advisory board to oversee advanced models, remove dangerous capabilities, and destroy banned systems. Violations could bring prison sentences of up to 20 years. The proposal comes amid growing concern over frontier AI safety, including recent reports that leading AI systems gained unauthorized access to real-world systems during testing and new OpenAI claims about advanced cybersecurity capabilities.
