Binance taps half its SAFU Bitcoin holdings, releases reserve proof
Summary
Binance transferred 7,499 BTC from its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) to help cover losses from a $6.3 billion hack, leaving roughly 7,500 BTC, worth $583 million, in the disclosed wallet. The FBI attributed the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group. Binance said it had replenished about 95% of affected assets and was buying the remaining tokens, using corporate funds, SAFU and part of its futures insurance fund. SAFU policy sets no deadline for replacing funds used after an incident. Binance also published cryptographic proof supporting a Saturday snapshot showing customer holdings in 10 cryptocurrencies were backed at least 1:1.
