Bitcoin Retail Inflows Hold Steady as Whales Pile In at Start of Historically Bullish October
Retail investors are currently lagging behind institutional investors in bitcoin purchases as October begins, a month typically bullish for BTC. Net inflows from smaller investors remain at normal levels, while larger investors are increasing their purchases. Data from exchanges OKX and Binance indicate minimal retail activity compared to the bull markets of 2021 and 2022, and even lower than during the 2019-2020 bear market. Fewer than 40,000 wallets are active daily on these exchanges, below the 50,000 seen during previous bear markets. October has historically produced gains for BTC, averaging 22% with only two negative months since 2013. Retail traders are often viewed as less informed and more emotional than institutional "whales." A significant influx of retail investment can signal bullish sentiment, but high inflows may indicate an overheating market. Retail traders typically enter the market when prices are high, which can lead to corrections when they sell out of fear or profit-taking.
