Calls Mount for UK to Ban Political Donations Made in Crypto

Summary

Labour MP Rushanara Ali has called for an outright ban on political donations made in cryptocurrency in the UK, warning that digital assets could be used for foreign interference in British democracy. She and other MPs argue that crypto donations enable circumvention of existing laws through methods such as multiple wallets, fragmented donations, and privacy coins. Seven Select Committee Chairs have previously urged the Prime Minister to explicitly ban crypto donations, citing the risk of opaque, hard-to-trace financial flows undermining democratic integrity. Advocacy groups, including Spotlight on Corruption and the UK Anti-Corruption Coalition, support a ban, noting the Electoral Commission currently lacks sufficient regulatory powers over crypto donations or foreign sources. Ireland and Brazil have already implemented similar bans. The Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy recently recommended a temporary moratorium on such donations until statutory guidance is introduced. Currently, only a few UK parties, notably Reform UK, accept crypto donations, while concerns mount over the sector’s vulnerability to abuse and lack of oversight. Reforms suggested include robust donor declarations and more comprehensive regulation to protect the political system from illicit funds.
