Coinbase brings global crypto derivatives markets to US institutional clients

Summary

Coinbase Financial Markets has started giving US institutional clients access to global crypto options and perpetual futures through a regulated futures commission merchant, including links to Deribit’s options platform. Coinbase says this follows CFTC guidance allowing a regulated FCM to connect US clients to global crypto derivatives liquidity, and claims it is the first CFTC-regulated FCM to do so. The rollout begins with institutional onboarding now, with retail access expected later. The move reflects a broader push to bring crypto derivatives into regulated US markets after SEC and CFTC officials signaled interest in onshoring perpetual futures. Coinbase’s Deribit acquisition strengthens its derivatives push, as Deribit remains the largest crypto options venue by open interest. Other US venues, including CME and Kraken’s Bitnomial, are also expanding crypto derivatives offerings.
