Crypto Graveyard: 50% Of Tokens Have Failed In the Past 5 years – Report
Over 50% of crypto tokens have failed in the past five years, according to a CoinGecko report. The study analyzed nearly 7 million tokens listed on GeckoTerminal, revealing that 3.7 million are no longer actively traded, resulting in a failure rate of 52.7%. The majority of these failures occurred between 2024 and early 2025, with 49.7% of all recorded project failures happening in the first quarter of 2025 alone. In 2024, approximately 1.4 million projects failed, marking a significant increase in the failure rate from 0.5% in 2021 to 25% in early 2025. The surge in token launches, driven by the Solana-based memecoin launchpad Pump.fun, contributed to this trend, leading to a proliferation of low-effort projects. Many celebrity memecoins saw market capitalizations plummet over 90%. The decline in token survivability is attributed to market exhaustion and turbulence, particularly following Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025.
