Crypto Influencer Jailed For $3.5M Cryptojacking Scheme
A Nebraska man, Charles O. Parks III, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for orchestrating a large-scale illegal "cryptojacking" scheme that defrauded cloud computing providers of over $3.5 million in resources, which he used to mine nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency. Parks, also known as "CP3O," pleaded guilty to wire fraud after being indicted in 2024. He will forfeit $500,000 and a luxury Mercedes-Benz purchased with the scheme's proceeds. Between January and August 2021, Parks created fake companies to deceive cloud providers into granting him high-level computing power, claiming to build an online education platform while actually running mining scripts. He laundered the mined cryptocurrency through exchanges and spent the proceeds on luxury items, portraying himself as a successful crypto influencer on social media.
