Crypto influencers spark false hope on FTX payouts, actual plan set for March 2025
Several crypto influencers incorrectly claimed that bankrupt FTX would begin distributions in January, leading to speculation about a market surge in 2025 due to a rumored $16 billion payout. FTX clarified that no payments will occur before March 2025, with the reorganization plan starting in January and initial payments expected 60 days later. Advocate Sunil Kavuri confirmed that January payouts are not happening and the $16 billion disbursement is unfounded. FTX's cash reserves are approximately $13 billion, projected to reach $14 billion by March, with potential additional funds from lawsuits and investments. The bankruptcy plan prioritizes creditors with claims under $50,000, covering over 90% of claimants. Payouts will reflect crypto values at the time of FTX's bankruptcy filing in November 2022. FTX has partnered with BitGo and Kraken for distribution using stablecoins. The exchange's collapse was linked to mismanagement by former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who misappropriated customer funds, leading to criminal convictions for him and associates.
