Crypto perp futures coming ‘very soon,’ says CFTC’s Mersinger
Crypto perpetual futures contracts may receive regulatory approval in the US soon, according to outgoing CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger. She indicated that applications for these contracts are being processed and that trading could begin shortly, emphasizing the benefits of bringing this trading onshore. Perpetual futures allow speculation on cryptocurrency prices without ownership and can be held indefinitely, unlike traditional futures. Currently, they are not permitted in the US and are primarily traded on offshore exchanges like Binance, which leads with significant trading volume. Mersinger highlighted the importance of recent legislative movements, such as the GENIUS stablecoin bill, in establishing the US as a leader in the crypto space. She will leave the CFTC at the end of May to join the Blockchain Association as CEO, aiming to further advocate for the crypto industry.
