ECB Picks Digital Euro Network Providers as Pilot Infrastructure Takes Shape

Summary

The ECB selected two provider groups—Nexi Payments with Deutsche Telekom Business Solutions, and Telefónica businesses with Indra—to provide connectivity for its digital euro platform. One contract began in September 2025, while the second is scheduled to start in May 2027; both groups are expected to be ready by 2029 to support potential issuance. The ECB’s planned 12-month pilot, expected to begin in the second half of 2027, will test technical, operational and user readiness. The procurement and pilot preparation do not mean the digital euro has been approved or will launch: issuance remains subject to the legislative process and a further ECB decision.
