Ethereum can quantum-proof accounts for just 7 cents, says Ethereum's Kohaku lead
Summary
Ethereum users may be able to add post-quantum account protection for as little as $0.07 without waiting for a hard fork. Nicolas Consigny of the Ethereum Foundation’s Kohaku project shared a proposal that adapts NIST’s SPHINCS+ signature scheme into a cheaper Ethereum-friendly version called “SPHINCS-.” The goal is to lower onchain verification costs while avoiding protocol changes or a precompile. SPHINCS- is intended as a stepping stone toward “leanSPHINCS,” which would further cut costs through aggregation. The proposal addresses Ethereum’s long-term exposure to quantum attacks on ECDSA and could be deployed before a dedicated network upgrade is ready.
