Ethereum dev targets 2028 for quantum resistance, a year early
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake said he hopes Ethereum can complete its post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028, one year earlier than the foundation’s existing December 2029 quantum-resistance target. The accelerated goal would require three network upgrades within 24 months. It does not formally replace the current roadmap, which is due for reassessment in January 2027. The plan follows earlier proposals for leanVM in 2027 and post-quantum deployments across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers in 2028. Other blockchain developers have questioned the timeline, with Starknet pursuing research into an independent post-quantum layer-1 and StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson warning that Ethereum’s 2029 target is too late and deadlines may slip.
