Ethereum devs test a 4x increase in gas limit for Fusaka hard fork

Summary

Ethereum core developers are considering increasing the layer 1 gas limit to 150 million for the upcoming Fusaka hard fork, following the Pectra upgrade. This proposal, outlined in Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 9678, aims to enhance scaling for layer 1 execution. Discussions during the All Core Devs Execution meeting emphasized making this increase a priority. Developers anticipate needing to address potential bugs in clients at higher gas limits, which necessitates collaboration with execution layer developers. The current average gas limit is approximately 36 million, having been raised from around 30 million in August 2021. The Pectra upgrade is set to launch on the mainnet in May, while Fusaka is projected for late 2025.
