Ethereum Layer-2 Teams Welcome Proposal to Overhaul Blockchain
zkSync and Polygon support a proposal to revamp Ethereum's consensus layer, known as the "Beam Chain," presented by developer Justin Drake at Devcon. The proposal includes integrating zero-knowledge cryptography to enhance transaction speed and reduce costs. Concerns about the obsolescence of zero-knowledge rollups are dismissed by industry leaders, who clarify that the changes focus on the consensus layer, not the execution layer where layer-2s operate. Key features of the Beam Chain include shorter block times and single-slot finality, which would improve usability and interoperability for layer-2 networks. Faster finality would enhance user experience by reducing transaction confirmation times between different ecosystems. The proposal is seen as a validation of zero-knowledge proofs as a scaling solution for Ethereum.
