Ex-Rugby Player Sentenced For $900K Crypto Mining Ponzi Scheme
Shane Donovan Moore, a former semi-pro rugby player, has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for defrauding over 40 investors out of more than $900,000 through a non-existent crypto mining business, Quantum Donovan LLC. Operating from January 2021 to October 2022, Moore promised daily returns of 1% from investments in crypto mining rigs. Instead, he diverted funds into personal accounts to support a lavish lifestyle, including luxury apartments and designer goods, while using some money to pay earlier investors and sustain the Ponzi scheme. Moore targeted fellow rugby players across multiple states, causing significant emotional and psychological harm to victims. His sentencing is part of a wider crackdown on crypto investment fraud, with over $2.17 billion in crypto stolen in 2023 alone. Moore was also ordered to pay restitution, though details of the repayment plan were not disclosed.
