Former 'Bitcoin Mayor' Eric Adams Reveals NYC Token to Fight 'Antisemitism and Anti-Americanism'
Former New York City mayor Eric Adams publicly endorsed a new cryptocurrency, “NYC Token,” at a Times Square press conference, stating the coin would fund efforts to combat antisemitism and anti-Americanism and promote blockchain education for children. The token has not yet launched, and Adams said he is not currently taking a salary from the initiative, though this could change in the future. He claimed a significant portion of raised funds would support nonprofits, historically Black colleges, and scholarships for underserved NYC students. Following his appearance, imitation tokens rapidly appeared online. Adams, noted for previously taking mayoral paychecks in Bitcoin and Ethereum, remains a vocal crypto advocate and wants to keep New York at the forefront of digital assets. He referenced his tenure’s challenges, including the FTX collapse, and recent dismissal of corruption charges against him. Adams' involvement highlights a trend of politicians embracing crypto, raising concerns among lawmakers about political figures profiting from such ventures and prompting calls for new ethics rules governing officials’ cryptocurrency activities.
