French Regulator Says It's 'Examining' Polymarket
The French gambling regulator, Autorite Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), is examining Polymarket, a crypto-based prediction market, for compliance with French gambling laws. ANJ is expected to ban access to Polymarket, as betting activities using cryptocurrencies are illegal in France. A French national, known as Theo, reportedly profited $50 million from bets on Donald Trump's election victory. Polymarket allows users to trade shares representing future outcomes, with payouts in USDC stablecoin. The platform is not accessible to U.S. residents due to a settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Proponents argue prediction markets provide better forecasts than traditional polls, but election betting remains controversial globally.
