Fully Autonomous AI Could Control Criminal Networks: Europol
Europol warns that blockchain and AI will accelerate serious and organized crime, predicting fully autonomous AI could lead to AI-controlled criminal networks. The 2025 Serious and Organised Crime Threat Assessment highlights the combination of AI and cryptocurrency as a driver for expanding online fraud, which is the fastest-growing sector in organized crime. Cryptocurrency is increasingly used in traditional crimes like drug trafficking and human trafficking, moving beyond cybercrime. AI enhances criminal efficiency by automating phishing campaigns, executing large-scale cyberattacks, and creating convincing deepfakes. AI also aids in optimizing ransomware operations and evading detection. TRM Labs reports that criminals are likely to adopt AI more widely, impacting the cost of organized crime. Despite these challenges, advancements in AI may also bolster law enforcement's ability to combat crime.
