Google Sues Chinese Crime Group for Allegedly Using Gemini AI for Mass Phishing Scams
Google sued an alleged Chinese cybercrime network, Outsider Enterprise, for using Gemini AI to scale phishing scams against U.S. victims. The group allegedly used Gemini to write code and templates for fake telecom and financial login pages, helping automate text-message fraud aimed at stealing banking and crypto credentials. Court filings say the operation spread more than 8,000 phishing sites across dozens of countries and may have stolen 3.87 million credit card numbers, causing about $1.9 billion in losses since July 2023. Google says it received about 55,000 suspicious-message reports in two weeks tied to the network. The case comes amid a sharp rise in AI-enabled fraud, especially crypto-related scams, which the FBI says are driving record losses and have prompted new enforcement efforts.
