Group Asks Federal Agency to Halt Use of Elon Musk's Grok AI Amid Racism Concerns
Public Citizen warned that Elon Musk’s Grok AI cited neo-Nazi and white-nationalist websites as credible sources, reinforcing concerns over its suitability for government use. The group urged the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to suspend Grok’s federal availability, citing Grokipedia’s repeated surfacing of extremist domains and past incidents where Grok generated racist, antisemitic, and conspiratorial outputs. Despite ongoing warnings from civil rights and advocacy organizations, Grok’s government use has expanded; xAI received a $200 million Pentagon contract, and the model has been made available to federal agencies alongside other major AIs. Critics say Grok’s problematic behavior stems from its training data and anti-"woke" design, raising alarm about its reliability for sensitive government tasks. Advocates emphasized the gap between Grok’s outputs and federal values, highlighting risks if the model is used in processes affecting citizens, such as application reviews. They argued the federal government has the authority to remove Grok from its procurement schedule but has yet to act. xAI did not respond to requests for comment.
