Hacked crypto exchange DMM seals deal with SBI, accounts to open March
SBI VC Trade has finalized a deal to acquire the assets of the hacked crypto exchange DMM Bitcoin, with customer accounts set to be ready by March 8, 2025. DMM customers will have their accounts automatically created at SBI, eliminating the need for new account registrations. DMM Bitcoin is liquidating due to a breach in May, where $320 million was stolen, including 4,500 Bitcoin. The FBI and Japan’s National Police Agency linked the attack to the North Korea-associated group TraderTraitor. The group exploited a malicious script sent to a Ginco employee, leading to unauthorized access and manipulation of transactions. Losses from attacks on centralized crypto services have surged to $694 million in 2024, with notable hacks including DMM and WazirX.
