India's Crypto Discussion Paper on Hold Due to Other Priorities

Summary

India has delayed publishing a discussion paper on cryptocurrency policy due to other priorities. Initially expected by September, the paper remains without a timeline. India lacks comprehensive crypto legislation but imposes high taxes and requires crypto entities to register with the Financial Intelligence Unit to comply with anti-money laundering standards. Current priorities include the 2024 IMF and World Bank meetings, regional conflicts, and national budget preparations amid an election year. Despite a significant hack of the WazirX exchange, crypto legislation is not seen as urgent compared to two years ago.
