Kakao Pay, KakaoBank to explore stablecoin opportunities with Fireblocks
Kakao Pay and KakaoBank signed an MoU with Fireblocks to explore digital asset infrastructure, including stablecoins, and to run proof-of-concept tests tailored to South Korea’s regulatory, security, and service needs. The goal is to build secure onchain infrastructure for the country’s growing digital asset market, though no launch or implementation timeline was announced. Kakao Pay provides mobile payments and financial services, and KakaoBank is a major internet-only bank within the Kakao ecosystem. Fireblocks supplies digital asset infrastructure to more than 2,500 institutions. The deal follows Kakao Group’s earlier MoU with Circle to explore blockchain payment infrastructure and won-denominated stablecoin services. It also comes amid broader activity from South Korean banks and fintech firms testing stablecoin use cases as local regulation develops.
