Kalshi adds India to growing list of restricted jurisdictions

Summary

Kalshi added India to its restricted jurisdictions, bringing the total to 55, so residents there can no longer access the platform. India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had recently warned VPN providers not to help users reach “illegal and blocked” betting and prediction market sites. The move comes amid broader global pressure on prediction markets: Spain blocked access to Polymarket and Kalshi over gambling rules, Indonesia blocked Polymarket after a politically sensitive contract listing, and countries including Singapore, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Ukraine, and Brazil have also restricted similar platforms. Regulators are increasingly focused on political and sports-related contracts. US lawmakers have proposed limits after insider-trading concerns around political bets, and Kentucky recently sued five prediction market firms, including Kalshi and Polymarket, over alleged unlicensed sports betting. Kalshi and Polymarket remain the largest players, with weekly trading volumes of about $3.7 billion and $3.2 billion, respectively.
