Lawyers Apologize After Fake Claude-Generated Quotes Appear in Trump Layoffs Case
Attorney Jason Greaves admitted to submitting a court filing containing fabricated legal quotations generated by Anthropic’s Claude Console AI. Under time pressure, he used the AI to draft the motion for a lawsuit challenging Trump administration federal layoffs. Greaves stated he instructed an associate to verify the AI-generated citations, and the associate replaced two incorrect citations but did not catch all errors. Greaves took full responsibility for the inclusion of fake quotations, apologized to the court and opposing counsel, and acknowledged the mistake. The incident highlights ongoing issues with "AI hallucinations"—AI tools generating non-existent legal content—in legal proceedings. Similar controversies have arisen recently, including sanctions against another law firm for using AI-generated fake citations.
