Metaplanet to form securities arm through Siiibo acquisition

Summary

Metaplanet agreed to acquire Siiibo Securities for 2.1 billion yen ($13.1 million) and will make it a wholly owned subsidiary, renamed Metaplanet Securities, once the deal closes in July. The move is the first step in “Project Nova,” aimed at building a Bitcoin-centric financial ecosystem in Japan. Metaplanet plans to use its 40,177 BTC treasury to develop and distribute Bitcoin-related yield products directly to Japanese investors, including BTC-linked bonds and other income-oriented products. Siiibo’s license, corporate bond platform, and customer base give Metaplanet a regulated path into securities and direct access to yield-seeking investors. Metaplanet currently holds about 457.6 billion yen ($2.8 billion) in Bitcoin, making it Japan’s largest publicly listed BTC holder and the third-largest globally. The acquisition also comes as Japan moves toward treating crypto more like a traditional financial asset, potentially opening the door to ETFs and friendlier tax treatment.
