Naughty or Nice? ChatGPT to Allow Erotica in December, Says Sam Altman
Starting in December, OpenAI will permit ChatGPT to generate erotic content for users who pass age verification, shifting away from its previous strict prohibition of sexual material. CEO Sam Altman announced that adults will be treated as adults under new, more robust age-gating systems. This responds to long-running user dissatisfaction with ChatGPT's filters, which often blocked even mild or clinical discussions of intimacy and led to widespread calls for an "Adult Mode." The change positions OpenAI to compete with rivals like xAI’s Grok and Character.AI, which have fewer restrictions on adult content, as well as with open-source AI models popular for unrestricted erotica generation. OpenAI asserts that separating adult and teen experiences will allow more freedom for adults while safeguarding younger users. The update will also soon introduce personality customization options for a more engaging user experience.
