OCC Finalises US Stablecoin Rules Ahead Of January 2027 Start
Summary
The OCC issued its final rule implementing parts of the GENIUS Act for payment stablecoin issuers it supervises, covering reserve assets, redemption, risk management, reporting, custody, applications and oversight of foreign issuers. The rule takes effect January 18, 2027. Separate Treasury-coordinated rulemaking will address Bank Secrecy Act, anti-money-laundering and OFAC requirements. The framework does not automatically license stablecoins; issuers must still apply for approval and meet the requirements.
