Ohio senator introduces bill to legalize Bitcoin, crypto payments for state taxes, fees
Ohio State Senator Niraj Antani introduced legislation to legalize Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency payments for state and local taxes. The bill, introduced on September 30, allows Ohioans to use digital assets for tax obligations, promoting wider crypto adoption in government transactions. Antani stated that cryptocurrency represents the present and future of the economy, emphasizing the need for innovation in Ohio. Ohio previously accepted crypto for tax payments in 2018 but halted the program due to regulatory issues. The new legislation aims to revive this initiative and also permits state universities and public pension funds to invest in cryptocurrencies. Other states, including Colorado, Wyoming, and Arizona, are exploring similar legislation, reflecting a growing interest in crypto for state payments despite federal caution.
