OpenAI Wants to Rebrand AI Data Centers, Use Them to 'Protect the Grid'
OpenAI launched a national program to let its planned AI facilities reduce electricity use during grid emergencies and peak demand, while exploring batteries and on-site generation. Its first example is a planned Georgia facility covered by a 25-year Georgia Power agreement for about 3,200 megawatts, with up to 1,000 megawatts available for temporary reductions. OpenAI must pay the facility’s required infrastructure costs. Georgia Power projects broader customer savings of about $950 million annually from 2029, but those are not attributable solely to OpenAI, and the facility remains under development. Binding commitments for other sites have not been disclosed. The initiative comes amid local concerns about data-center energy costs and a reported OpenAI effort to promote the term “AI compute campuses.”
