Optimism Foundation Agreed to Give Kraken $42.5M of OP Tokens in Layer-2 Deal
Kraken will launch a layer-2 network called Ink, utilizing Optimism's OP Stack framework, joining the "Superchain" ecosystem alongside Coinbase, Sony, and Uniswap. The Optimism Foundation has granted Kraken 25 million OP tokens, initially valued at $100 million but now worth approximately $42.5 million. The grant will be distributed over time based on monthly transaction achievements. Layer-2 networks have proliferated in the Ethereum ecosystem, with Coinbase's Base and Uniswap's Unichain also using OP Stack. Similar deals in the industry include Polygon's $4 million grant to Starbucks for an NFT loyalty program, which was discontinued after 18 months. The total supply of OP tokens is around 4.3 billion, with Base eligible for up to 118 million tokens over six years.
