Researcher who found Zcash's bug with AI adds Monero to his audit queue
Security engineer Taylor Hornby, who recently used Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 model to uncover a critical Zcash vulnerability, says he plans to audit Monero next. He said Monero will be added to his queue of cryptocurrencies to review. Hornby found the Zcash flaw on May 29 in the Orchard privacy pool, where it had existed since May 2022 and could have enabled unlimited, undetectable counterfeit ZEC. Shielded Labs disclosed the issue and rushed out an emergency fix by June 1. Zcash then dropped sharply amid concerns that funds may have been stolen from the shielded pool without detection. Hornby said he reported the bug instead of exploiting it because of his relationship with the Zcash team, and he now plans to seek funding through a Zcash grant.
