SEC Closes Consensys Ethereum 2.0 Probe, Removing A Major Staking Overhang
The SEC has reportedly closed its investigation into Ethereum 2.0 and will not recommend enforcement action, according to Consensys. This removes a major regulatory overhang for Ethereum, especially around proof-of-stake, staking, validators, and related wallet or custody services. The closure does not establish broad legal protection for all staking products, but it weakens the argument that Ethereum’s post-merge design itself should be treated as a securities issue. The broader U.S. crypto regulatory fight remains unresolved, with wallets, swaps, staking services, and token launches still facing scrutiny. Even so, this development reduces one of the biggest Ethereum-specific legal risks and may give builders and investors more confidence to focus on scaling, lower fees, and institutional adoption.
