Steak ‘N Shake to Roll Out US Bitcoin Payments Nationwide
Steak ‘n Shake will accept Bitcoin at all U.S. locations starting May 16, allowing customers to pay for food with the cryptocurrency. This initiative follows a social media engagement in March regarding Bitcoin acceptance. The rollout is seen as a test of Bitcoin's speed, cost, and usability in a fast-food context, where profit margins are thin. Other major chains have previously experimented with crypto payments, often converting Bitcoin to fiat at the point of sale. Starbucks and Chipotle have implemented similar systems, while Subway has trialed Bitcoin payments intermittently. Internationally, some fast food chains have adopted crypto in response to local currency instability, such as Burger King in Venezuela and Pizza Hut in El Salvador.
