Sui Blames Last Week's Trio of Network Outages on Gas and Validator Bugs
Sui network experienced three outages over about 48 hours, causing more than 15 hours of downtime. The first two failures came from crash bugs in the interaction between gas charging logic and release 1.72, which added an address balances feature and conflicted with existing gas calculation processes. The third outage happened during a scheduled epoch change and was caused by a separate latent bug in how validators preserve randomness state across restarts. The Sui Foundation said it accepted extra risk by using an interim fix to restore service quickly while a more durable solution was developed. The disruptions added to Sui’s reliability concerns: they were its third major mainnet failure since launch in 2023, following outages in November 2024 and January 2026. SUI’s token price also fell during the week, dropping about 18% to around $0.86 amid a broader crypto market decline.
