US banking groups plan nationwide blockchain network for 2027
Thirty-nine US state banking associations have formed the BankChain Alliance to create an industry-owned blockchain network for banks, with a target launch in 2027. The network is intended to support smart payment tools, tokenized deposits, stablecoins and automated settlement, and to work with other blockchains. BankChain is still choosing a technology partner and plans to invite banks nationwide to buy ownership stakes. It has not yet disclosed governance, funding, or specific bank participants. The move fits a broader trend of US bank-led onchain payment infrastructure. Other efforts include The Clearing House’s onchain money initiative backed by major banks, regional lender network Cari, and the community-bank DTX Consortium. These projects aim to move deposits and payments onchain while keeping them inside the regulated banking system.
