US lawmaker proposes crypto ATMs in federal buildings
A Texas Congressman proposed installing cryptocurrency ATMs in federal buildings to serve as an educational resource and showcase advancements in financial technology. Rep. Lance Gooden requested the General Services Administration (GSA) explore guidelines for such installations, aligning with former President Trump's goals. Gooden has no personal investments in cryptocurrency or ATM companies since taking office in 2019. The GSA may allow ATMs from federal credit unions, but it is unclear if it can include private digital asset ATMs. This proposal comes amid Senate discussions on legislation to prevent fraud related to crypto ATMs, highlighted by the Crypto ATM Fraud Prevention Act introduced by Senator Dick Durbin. The authority of the GSA administrator to install crypto ATMs without Congressional approval remains uncertain. Trump has significant ties to cryptocurrencies through personal investments and campaign funds.
