US lawmakers seek coordinated federal response to crypto theft and scams
US lawmakers have introduced a bill to create a Justice Department-led task force to coordinate investigations into cryptocurrency theft, scams, and other digital asset crimes across federal, state, and local agencies. The DOJ would act as the main federal coordinator, working with the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and FinCEN. The task force would set best practices for evidence collection, blockchain forensics, asset tracing, and victim support, while also providing training and technical help to local authorities. It would coordinate on cross-border cases and report annually to Congress on threats and enforcement gaps. The proposal does not create new crypto regulations, expand agency powers, or add new crimes. The push comes amid major losses from crypto crime, with Americans reporting over $11 billion in losses last year, while investigators increasingly use AI-based blockchain analytics tools.
