US Police Fear Meta Glasses Are Watching Them Back: Report
U.S. police and federal agencies are warning that Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses can be used to secretly record inside jails and police facilities. A New York Police Department counterterrorism memo called them a “security and counterintelligence” threat and urged staff to inspect eyewear allowed into inmate cells, citing risks such as exposing cell layouts, camera locations, and patrol routines. Similar warnings came from DHS-related counterterrorism units and fusion centers in several states. One memo noted the glasses may use AI features such as facial recognition, raising concerns about identifying or doxxing officers. ICE later told employees the glasses count as body-worn cameras and are banned in federal workspaces because they could capture sensitive information. Meta says the glasses are meant to be noticeable because a light blinks during recording, but examples show that warning may not always prevent covert filming.
