Vitalik Pushes Pluralistic IDs for Digital Privacy
Vitalik Buterin introduced a "pluralistic identity" system aimed at enhancing privacy and fair participation in digital life. He highlighted the risks of zero-knowledge (ZK) proof-wrapped IDs, particularly the danger of enforcing a single identity per person, which could undermine pseudonymity and increase surveillance risks. Buterin criticized the use of "proof of wealth" as an anti-Sybil measure, arguing it excludes the less affluent and consolidates power among the wealthy. He proposed pluralistic identity systems, where multiple authorities issue identities, allowing for flexibility and error tolerance. This approach could support stateless individuals and prevent market dominance by any single ID provider, balancing privacy, inclusivity, and resistance to abuse.
