0x Opens Swap API To AI Agents With USDC Pay-Per-Request Model
0x Protocol is opening its Swap API to AI agents with a pay-per-request model paid in USDC, letting autonomous software access decentralized liquidity without API keys, subscriptions, or manual billing. The key idea revives the long-unused HTTP 402 “Payment Required” concept using stablecoin rails, so a bot can directly pay for a quote, route, or swap from a wallet. This could make DeFi APIs more modular and easier for bots, wallets, trading tools, and agentic workflows to use, while reducing friction for developers who do not want enterprise contracts. The shift is still early and depends on solving security, permissions, wallet controls, and reliable payment handling. Even so, it points to a broader trend: the most important AI-crypto use case may be stablecoin-based machine-to-machine payments rather than AI-branded tokens.
