A Solana wallet tested a fake address with $10, then sent it $30,750

Summary

Bitquery found that address-poisoning scams targeted nearly 4.5 million Solana wallets between October 2025 and October 2026. Scammers sent tiny transfers from lookalike addresses to place them near legitimate recipients in transaction histories; victims who copied the fake address could then send larger amounts. In a documented case, a user sent $30,749.80 in USDT to a poisoned address after a small test transfer. Bitquery identified 1,104 wallets making qualifying payments totaling at least $940,106, while warning this loss estimate covers only a subset and does not mean all targeted wallets lost funds. Receiving dust alone does not drain a wallet: losses require the owner to authorize a payment to the wrong address. Phantom advises verifying the full recipient address and network rather than copying addresses from transaction history.
