Anthropic shutdown makes a strong case for decentralized AI: Grayscale
Anthropic’s suspension of access to its latest AI models after a US government order has been framed as evidence of the risks of centralized AI control and a boost for decentralized alternatives. Grayscale’s Zach Pandl said the move underscores how frontier AI can be restricted by governments and labs, increasing interest in decentralized projects like Bittensor and its TAO token. TAO reportedly jumped 30% in the 12 hours after access was cut and hit a three-week high. Bittensor is presented as an “alternative vision” for AI, offering global access through a decentralized network, akin to “Bitcoin for AI.” Critics said the episode shows companies effectively renting intelligence from large labs and establishes a precedent where governments can abruptly limit commercial AI access, creating an “invisible ceiling” for US AI labs.
