As Japan Election Looms, Political Parties Emphasize Need to Reform Crypto Tax Regulations
Yuichiro Tamaki, leader of Japan’s Democratic Party for the People, is proposing tax cuts and regulatory reforms for cryptocurrencies ahead of the Oct 27 national elections. He advocates for a separate 20% tax on crypto assets and no tax on exchanges between crypto assets. The party supports launching crypto exchange-traded funds, converting yen to electronic currency, and issuing digital regional currencies to boost local economies. Current crypto profits are taxed as income, with rates up to 45% for high earners, while capital gains from securities are taxed at a flat 20%. The Liberal Democratic Party, led by Shigeru Ishiba, is also reviewing crypto tax policies and promoting web3 and blockchain initiatives. The Constitutional Democratic Party plans to establish a legal framework for DAOs and consider central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) to diversify payment methods.
