'Axie Infinity' Gaming Network Ronin Sets Date for Ethereum Layer-2 Migration
On May 12, the Ronin blockchain will shift from being an Ethereum sidechain to an Ethereum layer-2 network by migrating to the OP Stack infrastructure. This migration will involve around 10 hours of network downtime, during which games may be unavailable. Key economic changes include reducing RON token inflation from over 20% to under 1%, increasing Treasury marketplace fees from 0.5% to 1.25%, and reallocating 90 million RON tokens from staking to the Treasury. A new "proof of distribution" system will automate developer rewards. The transition follows challenges sustaining standalone gaming blockchains amid declining crypto gaming markets, with major games and tokens losing over 98% of their value from peak levels. The move aims to leverage Ethereum’s security and scalability, reducing operational costs and adapting to industry trends marked by game closures and decreased venture capital investment in blockchain gaming.
